Start with who the book is for
The best personalised baby books are not encyclopedias of every milestone. They are love letters with a plot. Before you write a single line, decide the primary reader: the child reading it at five, the grandparents holding it now, or both.
If the book is mainly for the child later, use a warm second person (“you arrived on a rainy Tuesday…”). If it is mainly a gift for parents or grandparents today, a first-person voice from the family works beautifully (“We still remember the night we brought you home…”).
Dedication page ideas
Keep dedications short. One or two sentences beat a paragraph that tries to say everything.
- For you, little one — every page is a piece of the year we fell in love with you.
- To Amma and Appa, who measured days in feeds, first smiles, and tiny socks.
- From Dada and Dadi: the chapter we waited for, bound so we never forget.
- Written for your fifth birthday self, from the people who knew you first.
Chapter ideas for a first-year book
You do not need twelve equal months. Pick five to eight moments that still make you smile or tear up. A good sequence for a personalised baby book:
- The announcement (or the quiet moment you knew)
- Choosing the name — and who suggested it
- Coming home / first night
- People who showed up: grandparents, cousins, the neighbour who brought food
- First laugh, first solid food, first trip out of the city
- A hard night you got through together (kids love honesty later)
- Who they already are — funny habits, favourite song, the way they sleep
How to turn voice notes into book text
Most families do not write polished copy. That is fine. Send a voice note listing names, nicknames, cities, and three moments. At the Chapter Co., we shape that into illustrated story pages — you still approve every word before print.
Tip: include the funny, specific details (“you only slept if the fan was on two”) instead of generic praise. Specificity is what makes a custom baby book feel like yours.
What not to force onto the page
Skip long medical timelines unless they matter to your story. Skip comparisons to other babies. Skip filler pages that only exist to hit a page count. A shorter, truer personalised baby book always reads better than a padded one.
